Modern colors like blackboard paint or magnetic paint create a functional magnetic wall for the kitchen, hallway, office, or children’s room and are ideal for individualization. Create a wall with a graphic pattern and paint separate areas with blackboard paint or magnetic paint.
There are no limits to your creativity. You can write minor memos directly on the board and attach pictures and other things to the wall with magnets in the magnetic fields.
Blackboard and magnetic paint are available in many different colors. The colors do not necessarily have to be applied next to each other. They can also be combined. This creates practical results at home. Write on, wipe off again and write on again.
What are magnetic paint and blackboard paint?
Magnetic paint for interior use and blackboard paint are two innovative color ideas. Smaller areas can be perfectly individualized for your interior design. The colors do not necessarily have to be combined. Each of them can also be used individually.
But what distinguishes the two colors from each other and magnetic paint and blackboard paint?
Magnetic paint
Magnetic paint is generally gray magnetic paint, which has magnetic properties. Primarily, this magnetic paint is based on resistant latex paint, which is mixed with a high number of microscopic iron particles.
Due to the magnetism of the iron particles, magnets stick to your wall and turn it into a decorative surface for notes and photos. Magnetic paint is applied as a primer and then painted over with conventional wall paint or acted directly as a topcoat.
Blackboard paint
As the name of magnetic paint suggests its function, this is also the case with blackboard paint. So walls and other smooth surfaces, such as glass, plastic, or metal, can be painted regularly.
The processed surface can later be written on with chalk and thus becomes a blackboard used as the mood takes you. Blackboard paint is not only available in the dark green or black. There are now 14 different colors. Look for you accordingly any color.
Whether for your artwork, sayings, shopping lists, offers, or as a highlight on the wall in the children’s room, blackboard walls are becoming increasingly popular. The substrate for surface design with blackboard paint should be dry, clean, and free of grease.
The recommendation is to apply with a paint roller of two layers of paint for a good result.
Combine magnetic paint and blackboard paint
Magnetic chalkboard paint is straightforward to make yourself. With the following instructions in just a few steps, you can quickly bring a magnetic chalkboard wall into your home.
Preparation and necessary tools
Before you start combining the two colors, there is a preparatory step you need to go through before you start painting.
Since you need uniform tools for applying magnetic paint and blackboard paint, we have for you below a small list of necessary materials that you need from our experience for combining both colors.
Apply chalkboard paint and magnetic paint separately
Do you want a magnetic pinboard in your home to write with chalk on which you can also write? Then make sure that you do not mix the two colors before painting.
Apply the magnetic paint first and then paint over the chalkboard paint in a separate step. Painting over magnetic paint is also no problem at all. See more about painting over magnetic paint here.
Applying magnetic paint
The wall is first painted with a unique magnetic paint. This paint contains excellent iron particles, which later ensure that magnets stick to the painted wall. The magnetic paint itself is not yet writable; it must first be painted over blackboard paint.
However, despite good covering power, note that the magnetic paint must be applied thick enough in several layers to develop its full attractive ability even under the blackboard paint. Paying attention to the long drying time of 4 hours of individual layers is particularly important.
Tip: Another option is to combine the iron powder with wall paint to make magnetic paint yourself.
Applying blackboard paint
Once the several layers of magnetic paint have dried, the blackboard paint can be applied. The only thing to note here is that it is best to use the blackboard paint to a smooth surface.
Caution: The magnetic paint must dry for 2 weeks before the blackboard paint is applied over it! This prevents the formation of structures on the surface.
The smoother the surface, the better. Woodchip wallpaper, for example, is less suitable for painting with the blackboard paint since the structure of the wallpaper is not a minor hindrance later when writing and painting.
Whether you decide to use a brush or roller for an application depends not least on the substrate and the consistency of the paint. The paint roller can achieve better results; the result will be more uniform.
When using a brush, the strokes must be at right angles (90°) to each other. In this way, the overall picture appears more even in the end. Depending on the composition and consistency, about 0.100 – 0.250 liters of blackboard paint are required for 1 m².
A panel coating can be given a second coat after a good 4 hours drying time. After a further 48 hours of drying time, the board surface can be labeled.
FAQ
What is the difference between blackboard varnish and blackboard paint?
There is often talk of both blackboard paint and blackboard varnish. In the end, a clear answer cannot be given when looking at the product range on the market. The terms panel varnish and panel paint are often used synonymously, even by the same supplier.
Sometimes the term chalkboard paint is also used. Whether the offered color and/or the lacquer differ from each other, thus actually probably depends on the manufacturer’s choice. Varnishes are usually more liquid have a short drying time but are generally sufficient for less area.
Can blackboard paint also be used for furniture and decoration?
Boring furniture and decorative elements can also be easily transformed into unique pieces with a bit of blackboard paint. The best thing about it is that you can always decorate them anew with a bit of chalk.
For example, doors are suitable for this: the workplace table, a stool, or even the closet. Even simple flower pots in the garden or balcony can be painted with chalkboard paint.
Can blackboard paint be written on with liquid chalk?
Regular blackboard chalk can be used to write or paint blackboard paint without any problems. However, chalk markers with liquid chalk are often only suitable for surfaces that are not porous. In the case of porous surfaces, i.e., old blackboards, paper, or painted walls, however, it can happen that the liquid chalk cannot be removed or can only be removed with difficulty.
Therefore, whether liquid chalk is suitable for board paint or board varnish depends on its composition. Board paint can typically be wiped off with a microfiber cloth and a little water when slightly damp.
If the blackboard paint has stubborn liquid chalk on it, a special cleaner or a cloth with a bit of toothpaste to remove it may help.
Tip Use ordinary cola. Soak a sponge with cola and wipe the chalkboard. This works exceptionally well if blackboards have a sizeable white film due to frequent wiping.
With this method, hardly any white streaks remain, making blackboards and blackboard walls look unsightly over time.
